Farming Systems Development Models

Vermiculture-based Farming System Development

This is a 0.32-hectare integrated farming system, which was developed to showcase one of the composting technologies CRTD promotes to its clients--Vermicomposting. This project is being implemented to ensure availability of organic fertilizers for vegetables, ornamentals and fruit crops projects of the Center. Aside from compost as organic fertilizer, vermins (worms) are also produced, which are potential source of protein feeds for fish and poultry. It also integrates other projects, which include fruit crops and landscaping species and vegetables.

Tilapia Production and Hatchery

The Center implements the 1.54-hectare Tilapia Hatchery and Fattening Project to assure the availability and regular supply of quality tilapia stocks that can be produced through inland fishery. At present, CRTD produces the following strains of tilapia: FAST or Freshwater Aquaculture Selected Tilapia, CNT or Common Nile Tilapia (GET-XCEL or Genetically Enhanced Tilapia- XCEL and Sex Reversed Tilapia (SRT).

Livestock-based Farming System Development

BUKHAY Livestock-Based Project is an integrated farming system for a 0.36-hectare farm. This was conceptualized to convince farmers still practicing the monocrop farming to diversify their farms to increase income. A regular farm family manages this farm. The major components of the system are dairy cattle and swine breeding. Other components include hogs, vegetables, fruit crops, biogas and vermicomposting.

Lowland Agroforestry Production System

This is a 7,800 m² project, which aims to demonstrate appropriate and viable technologies of highly marketable fruit crops (i.e. durian, pomelo, rambutan) to provide additional income to farmers. It will highlight nursery establishment and management and will implement the following technology agenda: row-strip intercropping of annuals and perennial crops, organic farming and establishment and maintenance of Multi-Purpose Tree Species (MPTS) as boundary crops and windbreakers.

Aquaculture-Based Farming Systems Development

This project was developed to provide a model for a 0.56-hectare Aquaculture-Based integrated farming system. Also managed by a single farm family, production is concentrated on Tilapia Nursery and Ornamental Fish Culture (Japanese Carp or Koi, Moli and Silver Carp). Integrated into the system are the vegetables, fruit crops and vermicomposting projects.
